Growth

Built in 1881, the Carrie furnaces were made to produce iron for the homestead works and to stimulate industrial growth. Until they closed down in 1982, the Carrie Furnaces gave jobs to families in the area that needed to make a living to feed their families. Working at the furnaces was usually a difficult and dangerous job on a daily basis. Many employees were often injured and sometimes died on the job. Today only furnaces 6 and 7 still stand out of 7. Recently plans were made for a redevelopment of the area including community and residential development, a hotel, conference center, and a museum. I'm most looking forward to seeing the deer head constructed from old tubing and remnants from the blast furnaces when we go for class.
